One of the ten Canterbury Water Management Strategy target areas is environmental limits. This includes flow and allocation limits for water quantity and catchment load limits for water quality.

Zone committees work with local communities to develop recommendations for these water quantity and water quality limits, which are given effect to through the Canterbury Land and Water Regional Plan (LWRP).

South Coastal Canterbury

The zone committee has completed recommendations for managing water quality and quantity in South Coastal Canterbury, including limits.

These recommendations will be given effect to in Plan Change 3 to the LWRP.

Lower Waitaki

Water quantity in Lower Waitaki is managed under the Waitaki Catchment Water Allocation Regional Plan (WCWARP). The zone committee recommended changes to this plan, which were given effect to through Plan Changes 2 and 3 to the WCWARP.

The committee has also completed recommendations for managing water quality in Lower Waitaki, including limits. These recommendations will be given effect to in Plan Change 5 to the LWRP.
