Our region has a vast transport network, and as such, faces a number of challenges. Population growth and urban development mean our transport network needs to cope with increased demand and keeping everyone safe. Climate change effects highlight the importance of reducing transport emissions and encouraging the use of sustainable modes of transport. And an increase in the number of severe weather events around the motu means that our transport network for motorists and freight needs to be more resilient than ever.

In response, the Regional Land Transport Plan 2021-2031(external link) maps out how we plan to develop our land transport system over the next 10 years. Plan priorities reflect regional, national and international challenges and trends, and provide actions to address these for Canterbury's regional, city and district councils and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency(external link). The Plan was developed by the Regional Transport Committee, adopted by Environment Canterbury, and took effect on 1 July 2021.

Submissions on the draft Canterbury Regional Land Transport Plan for 2024–34(external link) have closed. We are now preparing for hearings and deliberations.
