Hapū
sub-tribe, clan, section of a large tribe.
Hāpua
means a shallow lake at the termination of a river, separated from the sea by a bank of sand or shingle and includes coastal lakes which may be in the coastal marine area.
Hazardous Activities and Industries List (HAIL)
a list of land use activities and industries that use, store or dispose of hazardous substances which could cause site contamination should these substances escape from safe storage or areas of disposal. The HAIL can be downloaded from the Ministry for the Environment’s website.
Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996
Act of Parliament that controls the import, manufacture, use, storage, transport, and disposal of hazardous substances that are imported into or manufactured in New Zealand.
Hill and high country
is land with a slope of more than 20 degrees or land that is more than 600 metres above sea level.
Hot work
burning, cutting, welding, grinding or other similar work involving heat sources on board vessels in a harbour.
Hydraulic connection
groundwater that is laterally connected to a river.
