Southern Proteins granted consent to discharge to air

A consent application by Southern Proteins Limited to discharge contaminants to air from a proposed low temperature rendering plant (at 144 Meadows Road, Washdyke) has been granted for a term of 20 years, subject to a detailed set of conditions.

The comprehensive conditions include:

  • peer review requirements for the design of the plant
  • two-yearly independent reviews of the odour control system
  • continuous monitoring of process parameters
  • regular liaison meetings with local residents and businesses, and
  • a requirement to cease discharging if any complaints are substantiated as causing offensive or objectionable odour effects.

The hearing was held on 24 February 2020. There were 25 submitters, 11 of whom were heard. Submitters and Southern Proteins have 15 working days (from 14 April 2020) to appeal the decision.
