Environment Canterbury sets swimmable lakes and rivers targets

Environment Canterbury has set targets for swimmable lakes and rivers. The Canterbury targets are for 92 percent of rivers and 81 percent of lakes being swimmable by 2030. Currently, 86 percent of Canterbury rivers are swimmable.

The targets are a step towards the Ministry for the Environment’s national goal of 90 percent of rivers and lakes being swimmable by 2040.

The targets are required under the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management. These targets must contribute to achieving the national target for 90 percent swimmable lakes and rivers by 2040.

The targets are based on an analysis of what is likely to be achieved through the current planning structure and non-regulatory interventions in Canterbury. This analysis was done at a national level and results are in a report 'Regional information for setting draft targets for swimmable lakes and rivers' can be viewed on the Ministry for the Environment website.

The report was prepared jointly by Regional Councils, the Ministry for the Environment and the Ministry of Primary Industries, with advice from technical experts.

“There is some excellent work already underway across the region, and Environment Canterbury’s stock exclusion rules are key in the expected improvements in swimmability,” says Caroline Hart, Environment Canterbury Programme Manager.

“Other factors include the ongoing programme of ecological restoration under Environment Canterbury’s Immediate Steps, as well as improvements in nutrient management and the benefits of Farm Environment Plans.”
