Background notes
Groundwater is recharged from rainfall infiltration and losses from the Chatterton and Percival rivers/tributaries that cross the Hanmer Basin. River losses of about 60 l/s have been measured in the Chatterton River near Hanmer Springs (Leech, 1988) and are not included in the proposed allocation limit. Although groundwater use is very small compared to the allocation limit, stream depletion impacts would need to be considered where groundwater is abstracted from shallow gravel aquifers connected to the rivers.
