Free firewood may be bad for the environment – that’s the message of Environment Canterbury’s “free firewood bin”, which toured Christchurch libraries.
The bin highlights the fact that burning some materials, often offered free on demolition sites, in woodburners or open fires can pose a health risk to people in the house and neighbourhood and damage a woodburner. Driftwood, painted wood, treated wood, and wet wood are not good firewood.
“A friend of a friend offered us some cheap firewood,” says Marianne Soulier of New Brighton. “Well, it was just rubbish. It came straight from a demolition yard, wood with paint on it, railway sleepers. That sort of stuff is just not meant to be burned.
“Not all cheap or free firewood is bad, but be aware of what you are getting,” Marianne says. “They come to your home and before you know it they have dumped it and are gone again. We will never do it again and will just buy regular firewood.”
