The pollution hotline receives around 70 calls a week from the public. The types of incidents reported include:
- pollution in streams
- dumping of hazardous materials and waste
- earthworks and disturbance in a river bed
- smoky chimneys
- unauthorised irrigation
- outside fires.

The pollution hotline is divided into 2 teams. The northern team (based in Christchurch) investigates complaints north of the Rakaia River to the Kaikoura district and across to the main divide. The northern team consists of 4 full-time enforcement officers and 10 on-call environmental protection officers.
The southern team is based in Timaru and deals with complaints from south of the Rakaia River to the north bank of the Waitaki River and across to the main divide. The southern team consists of 2 full-time enforcement officers and 5 on-call environmental protection officers.
