Financial incentives are aimed at encouraging householders to replace existing open fires and older solid fuel burners with cleaner heating in order to improve air quality to meet the National Environmental Standard.
For Christchurch, Kaiapoi and Ashburton there are home heating rules as part of the Air chapter of the proposed Canterbury Natural Resources RegionalPlan.
The rules for Christchurch are already in effect and will be enforced from 1 April to 30 September effective from 1 April 2010.
The rules for Kaiapoi take effect all year round from May 1, 2010 or as soon as a house changes ownership. The rules will be fully enforced from May 2011.
The rules for Ashburton take effect all year round from May 1, 2011 or as soon as a house changes ownership. The rules will be fully enforced from May 2012.
