Environment Canterbury's Air plan rules are now operative for Ashburton these state the following:
- that from 1 May 2011 or after a sale of a house whichever comes first you are not allowed to use an open fire.
- that from 1 May 2011 or after a sale of a house whichever comes first you are not allowed to use or a solid fuel burner not approved by Environment Canterbury that was installed before 1 January 2001.
- You are not allowed to use a solid fuel burner not approved by Environment Canterbury that was installed after 1 January 2001, 15 years after installation.
- You are not allowed to use a burner approved by Environment Canterbury, 15 years after installation.
However you can apply for a resource consent if an engineers reports indicates it is still in good working order.
Environment Canterbury has made the decision not to enforce these rules until 1 May 2012 to allow property owners time to upgrade their heating appliances.
