If you live on a property that has been zoned residential by the Ashburton District Council you are not allowed to have an outdoor fire on your property at any time of the year, without a resource consent.
If your property is zoned rural you may be allowed to burn if there is no winter rural fire ban, or district council summer fire ban for your area.
Your fire must be 100 metres downwind or 50 metres from any boundary or sensitive activity. You can only burn your own or your immediate neighbours waste vegetation (including stubble and crop residue), paper, cardboard and untreated wood.
Sensitive activities include schools, hospitals, parks, residential areas and any public amenity area or place of public assembly.
Outdoor burning on Ashburton rural properties is not permitted without a resource consent from Environment Canterbury during the winter fire ban.
The Ashburton outdoor winter fire ban runs from 1 May to 31 August
