The oldest mining privileges were granted last century and included water race licences which give property owners rights to use water in certain streams for mining activities. As land use changed over time, many licences were altered to allow water to be taken for stockwater and irrigation purposes.
The only location of active mining privileges in Catnerbury is in the lower Waitaki catchment, on the south side of the lower Waitaki River. All of these privileges will expire on 1 October 2021, at which point permit holders will need to apply for resource consent to take and use this water.
Mining privileges apply to an existing water race system, and therefore to a particular land parcel or parcels. They are automatically transferred upon sale of the land on which the intake and water race head are located.
