The Canterbury Regional Council has set levels at which the lake will be opened. The sea naturally will close the artificial channel again. Levels at which the lake will be opened are in winter (April to July) 1.13 metres above sea level summer (August to March) 1.05 metres above sea level. High tide level is at 0.9 metres.
