Landlords are obliged to provide alternative heating if they agreed to provide heating in the tenancy agreement and could be liable for a fine if they don’t. In the first instance talk to your landlord and work out an amicable solution if you can. Make sure they are aware that help is available to landlords through the Warm Up New Zealand Program to change to cleaner heating and to insulate homes. The Warm Up New Zealand Program is offered by EECA/Engergywise. For more information, please visit their website (details below).
As a last resort and if you think your landlord is not taking his responsibilities seriously, talk to Tenancy Support Services on 0800 836 262 and seek advice on your options.
