Environment Canterbury has Clean Air Zones for Christchurch, Rangiora, Kaiapoi and Ashburton. If your property is located within one of these zones you may be restricted as to what type of home heating you can install .
You will require a resource consent to burn outdoors in any residential area or clean air zone in Canterbury. A new rule has been proposed that would allow the burning of paper, cardboard, untreated wood or green waste only in urban areas where there are no kerbside collections, recycling or waste transfer stations in the township.
