In certain situations it is possible to discharge swimming pool water into a river or onto land without requiring a resource consent. There a number of conditions you must be able to comply with.
The conditions that need to be met relate to the following environmental factors:
- Maintaining river water quality
- Maintaining river flow levels
- Concentration of acceptable chemicals are kept within required levels
- There are no discharges containing prohibited chemicals
- Depth to groundwater and access to sewerage networks
- Proximity to surface water, wetlands, and wells
There are slightly different conditions for the discharge of pool filter backwashes due to the increased concentration of chemicals and these can only be discharged to land.
Environment Canterbury recommends calling our Customer Services Team to discuss your individual situation.
