In the Kaiapoi Clean Air Zone One there is an existing pollution issue and at times during the winter, Kaiapoi has poor air quality largely caused by home heating .
In order to clean up the air and meet the National Environmental Standard for air quality in Kaiapoi, Environment Canterbury is trying to restrict the number of solid fuel burners.
The installation of a clean air approved woodburners if it is a replacement for an existing burner or open fire is a permitted activity and does not require resource consent from Environment Canterbury.
If you are wishing to install a woodburner into a new house or a house that does not currently have a woodburner you will need to apply to Environment Canterbury for a resource consent.
