Canterbury Regional Policy Statement, including links to Proposed Plan Changes 1 and Proposed Variations 1-4
The Regional Policy Statement (RPS) provides an overview of the resource management issues of Canterbury. It sets out how natural and physical resources are to be managed in an integrated way with the aim of sustainable management.
Transitional Regional Plan for Canterbury, excluding Kaikoura
Section 368 of the Resource Management Act 1991 provides for certain existing instruments, such as bylaws or water quality classifications, to become a Transitional Regional Plan.
Transitional Regional Plan for Kaikoura
In May 2001, Environment Canterbury confirmed the removal of the expiry date (31 December 2000) from the Transitional Regional Plan for Nelson-Marlborough region as it applies within Kaikoura District (including changes 1 and 2). It also added additional conditions for the general authorisation for the discharge of septic tank effluent to land.
Waimakariri River Regional Plan
This plan sets out the objectives, policies, and methods for resolving resource management issues within the catchment of the Waimakariri River.
Opihi River Regional Plan
The purpose of this Plan is to promote the sustainable management of the natural and physical resources of the Opihi River, its tributaries including the Temuka River, and hydraulically connected groundwater and to achieve the integrated management of those resources.
Waitaki Catchment Water Allocation Regional Plan
The Plan provides for the allocation of water in the Waitaki catchment on a basis that is consistent with the purpose and principles of the Resource Management Act 1991.
Regional Coastal Environment Plan
This plan promotes the sustainable management of the natural and physical resources of the Coastal Marine Area and the coastal environment and its integrated management. It sets out the issues relating to protection and enhancement of the coast, water quality, controls on activities and structures and coastal hazards.
Land and Vegetation Management Regional Plan
This plan consists of 3 parts that address various aspects of land and vegetation management throughout Canterbury.

Part 2 Earthworks and Vegetation Clearance Port Hills
Part 4 Land Management Fires Canterbury Hill and High Country
Proposed Plans - Changes and Variations
Proposed Regional Policy Statement Plan Changes
Proposed Change No.1 introduces a new Chapter 12A, (Development of Greater Christchurch) which sets out the land use distribution, particularly the areas available for urban development, the household densities for various areas and other key components for consolidated and integrated urban development and that land which is to remain rural for resource protection and enhancement and other reasons.
Proposed Natural Resources Regional Plan
The Natural Resources Regional Plan (NRRP) addresses sustainable management of natural resources in the Canterbury Region. The NRRP consists of 8 chapters. It includes the following variations:
