Additional Info: This was posted at 10-30 am Wednesday the 18th of December. The Met Service has issued the following Severe Thunderstorm watch:
"Scattered thunderstorms are expected over Otago and Canterbury this afternoon and evening. Some of these thunderstorms could be SEVERE, especially south of Ashburton down to Dunedin, producing localised downpours, large damaging hail, squally winds and possibly a small tornado. Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips. Large hail can cause significant damage to crops, orchards, vines, glasshouses and vehicles as well as making driving conditions hazardous.
Note: A Severe Thunderstorm watch means conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. People in these areas should be on the lookout for thundery weather conditions and listen for possible Severe Thunderstorm warnings.
This watch will be updated by 02.00 pm Wednesday 18 December 2013."
