The Kaikōura water management zone committee was officially launched at an event on 15 July to begin addressing local water issues using the goals and methods developed via the Canterbury Water Management Strategy.
Following the launch, the zone committee members met for an orientation workshop. On 26 July 2011 the committee had its first public meeting where it received a number of presentations on water issues and freshwater biodiversity in the zone.
At subsequent meetings the committee has received presentations on the state of the water in the region, cultural values, Canterbury Water targets, and the Kaikōura Marine Strategy.
The committee has also been discussing priority areas for its $100,000 of Immediate Steps funding to support on-the-ground freshwater-related biodiversity projects.
At its February meeting, its first for 2012, the zone committee discussed its initial water management priority outcomes and the key pathways to achieve these in the zone.
The prioritiy outcomes will form the basis of the committee's water management Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP), which will be developed in conjunciton with the community.
In March the committee held a series of public meetings to get communtiy feedback on the water management priority outcomes.
In April the committee looked at water management regimes in the zone with a focus on water quantity limits, allocation, and flows.
