It represents the increasing expectation to better understand the link between the amount of freshwater allocated for use and the actual amount used. More and better data from water users – largely resulting from the National Regulations for Water Measurement – will provide the information needed to better understand water use in Canterbury.
The report summarises data from 3884 groundwater and surface water takes that had good enough quality data to analyse. This represents 50.4% of all consented surface water and groundwater takes in Canterbury (with a rate of 5 litres per second or more). While the results should be considered as indicative only, there are marked differences in actual water use throughout the 10 water management zones, set up as part of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy.
