- You could be eligible for subsidies or loans on an insulation and energy efficient replacement heating – check out Environment Canterbury’s Clean Heat Project.

- Community Energy Action: Subsidies are available for homeowners who hold a Community Service Card, landlords, low-income elderly persons with health problems and low-income families with babies under one year old. The house must be built before the year 2000.
- The Home Energy Advice Centre is a free phone service for Canterbury residents, offering impartial advice on: insulation, financial assistance, heating and ventilation options, saving money on power bills, efficient appliances, etc. To speak to an advisor, call the free phone number 0800 388 588; alternatively email Canterbury@energyadvice.org.nz or visit the website.
- An increasing number of organisations are offering ‘energy efficiency’ home design and build services in Canterbury including: Right House, Switch Energy, Right Light (lighting), Natural Element Homes, Lockwood Homes (EcoSmart), Energy Efficient Homes. Roger Buck and Associates, 3 Architecture, SolArchitect, Powered Living and Ebode.

Home space heating accounts for the highest proportion of the average yearly New Zealand household’s energy bill at 34% according to research undertaken by BRANZ.
There are a number of organisations that provide information, advice, assistance and incentives on home heating, insulation and energy efficiency:
Environment Canterbury has information on clean home heating, insulation, energy efficiency, and energy audits in the home.
A number of assistance alternatives or subsidies are available to help you insulate your house and convert to a cleaner heating appliance, creating a warmer, healthier home in the process. Community Energy Action (CEA) is a charitable trust that provides services and information on energy efficiency. Subsidies are available for homeowners who hold a Community Services Card, landlords, low-income elderly persons with health problems, and low-income families with babies under one year old. Services include:
- Installation of insulation and clean heating appliances
- Curtain Bank: provides free recycled lined curtains for low income households (open March to October)
- Hot water cylinder wrap and hot water pipe lagging
Products include low-cost DIY energy efficiency products:
- Plastic window insulation kits. Prices range from $19 to $25. Can be purchased online.
- Window and door draught-stopping products
- Hot water cylinder wraps
