There is now close to $2 million available annually from Environment Canterbury to support biodiversity protection and restoration in the region, as well as an increased and dedicated staffing resource to ensure the most effective use of that money. Most projects will also incorporate an additional contribution from landowner/third parties.

The funding is available through a number of channels:

• Through Immediate Steps; a biodiversity protection and enhancement programme under the Canterbury Water Management Strategy.
• Through the Environment Enhancement Fund; a fund that helps community groups and landowners to carry out projects that protect and restore biodiversity.
• Through the Wilding Conifers Programme; a fund which helps landowners to reduce the spread of seeds and adopt wilding prevention techniques.
• Through the Honda TreeFund which provides funding for native trees.
• Through targeted funding that aims to identify and prioritise specific sites requiring urgent protection.
