What is biodiversity?

Biodiversity is short for biological diversity and describes the variety of living things and how they interact in a habitat or ecosystem.  It forms a fundamental part of the natural heritage and unique character of New Zealand. Canterbury is home to a number of rare and threatened species and ecosystems that make this region special and highlights the importance of protecting and restoring biodiversity in the region.

Environment Canterbury helps in a number of ways to ensure that biodiversity in the region is both protected and maintained for future generations. Environment Canterbury provides funding, expert advice and on the ground support as well as collaborating with external agencies to provide quality information. This allows for us to support biodiversity protection and restoration in the Canterbury region.
