Local authority elections throughout New Zealand are held every three years, and are conducted by postal vote. The elections are conducted under the provisions of the Local Electoral Act 2001, the Local Electoral Regulations 2001 and the Local Government Act 2002.
Elections are required for the 14 councillors of the Canterbury Regional Council as follows:
- 2 councillors shall be elected by the electors of the Christchurch North Constituency
- 2 councillors shall be elected by the electors of the Christchurch East Constituency
- 2 councillors shall be elected by the electors of the Christchurch South Constituency
- 2 councillors shall be elected by the electors of the Christchurch West Constituency
- 2 councillors shall be elected by the electors of the North Canterbury Constituency
- 2 councillors shall be elected by the electors of the South Canterbury Constituency
- One councillor shall be elected by the electors of the Rakaia Constituency
- One councillor shall be elected by the electors of the Selwyn Banks Penninsula Constituency
Environment Canterbury candidates
Environment Canterbury received 36 nominations for candidates to stand in the October 2007 regional council elections. These candidates stood in 8 constituencies: 4 Christchurch constituencies and 4 out of Christchurch, for 14 councillor positions. Of these, 8 are within Christchurch, 6 are outside of Christchurch - 2 in South Canterbury, 2 in North Canterbury and one each for Rakaia (includes Ashburton) and Selwyn/Banks Peninsula.
The Rakaia constituency didn't hold an election in 2007 as the incumbent regional councillor, Angus McKay, was the only nominee.
