You are not required to replace an open fire or old woodburner. However, in Christchurch Clean Air Zone 1 you will not be allowed to use an open fire or old woodburner from 1 April to 30 September each year.
Environment Canterbury will be enforcing this ban from April 2010 and homeowners found using these old fires will incur a $300.00 fine.
Please note, the enforcement of these rules will not apply to properties that have been damaged by the earthquakes and are unable to install replacement heating at this time.
