You are not required to replace an open fire or old woodburner. However, in Christchurch Clean Air Zone 1 you will not be allowed to use an open fire or old woodburner from 1 April to 30 September each year. To find out whether you are in Christchurch Clean Air Zone 1, you can contact our Customer Services team or use our online GIS service, Canterbury Maps.
Environment Canterbury will be enforcing this ban from April 2010 and homeowners found using these old fires may incur a $300 fine.
Please note, the enforcement of these rules will not apply to properties that have been earthquake damaged, are waiting on repairs or a rebuild that would impact the replacement of that burner, and the woodburner is the only form of heating on the property. If this is the case for you please contact our Customer Services team who will need to take the details of your situation to pass onto our Enforcement Team.
