If you live on a property that has been zoned residential by the Waimakariri District Council, you are not allowed to have an outdoor fire on your property at any time of the year, without a resource consent.
If your property is zoned rural, you may be allowed to burn if there is no winter rural fire restrictions from Environment Canterbury nor a summer fire ban for your area from the Waimakariri District Council.
Your fire must be 100 metres downwind or 50 metres in any other direction from any property boundary or sensitive activity. You can only burn your own or your immediate neighbours' waste vegetation (including stubble and crop residue), paper, cardboard and untreated wood.
Outdoor burning on Kaiapoi or Rangiora rural properties in Clean Air Zones 1 and 2 is not permitted without a resource consent from Environment Canterbury during the winter months.
The Kaiapoi and Rangiora outdoor winter rural fire restriction runs from 1 May to 31 August each year.
