Yes - as long as the following is true:
- your property is zoned rural
- there is no winter fire ban (applies to properties in Clean Air Zones)
- there is no city/district council summer fire ban for your area
- there is no sensitive activity 100 metres downwind or 50 metres in any other direction from your fire
- You only burn vegetation (including stubble and crop residue), paper, cardboard and untreated wood.
Sensitive activities include schools, hospitals, parks, residential areas, a neighbour's dwelling and any public amenity area or place of public assembly.
Outdoor burning in Rangiora, Kaiapoi, Christchurch and Ashburton Clean Air Zones is not permitted without a resource consent from Environment Canterbury during the winter fire ban. The outdoor winter fire bans runs between 1 May to 31 August each year.
If your property is located within 1 kilometre of land owned by the Department of Conservation you will need to seek approval from them as well.
